As the Australian Mining Market gains strength and continues to expand across the country new job opportunities arise, seeing the percentage of employed mining workers increase. Although many job openings require workers with prior experience to keep production running at maximum capacity, it is becoming more common in regional areas for entry level positions to become available.

We find the best way to get your foot in the door of the mining industry is to do as much research as possible, finding out company procedures and requirements before committing to applying for a role.

Don’t Limit Yourself

Just because you have taken the time to prepare a specific cover letter, resume and interview steps your job is not done. Accelerate your job search, start going out and seeing employers, stopping by offices and networking with current workers rather than just applying online. It is sometimes so easy to use the internet that we forget how important it is to shake hands with people.

You will have a better chance of getting a job if an employer sees your face, making you more of a memorable candidate when they are making the final decision.

Minimum Requirements for Mining Worksites

Not all mining sites require the same qualifications or credentials, and personal requirements for jobs may differ depending on mining site or host company.

[It is best to check with the company before obtaining further tickets.]

Site Requirements may include some or all of the following:

-Common Vehicle Licence – It is common for mining sites to require you to hold a current Australian Manual drivers’ licence.

-Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence – This licence requires a fee to obtain, therefore it would be recommended to first check whether this is a required qualification of a particular role.

-Security Clearances – Most mining sites will ask that you present a National Police Check Certificate (NPC) as well as additional state-based security checks

-Medical Requirements –

  • A pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Screen is completed within 14 days of arriving at the mine site and if the results are older than the 14 days the applicant will be required to perform the screening again. While on site the test is taken randomly on a regular basis. The Drug & Alcohol Screen is supervised at all times by medical staff.
  • Pre-Employment Medical assessments consists of questions that will determine your medical condition and fitness so that an applicant is able to take on the appropriate responsibilities and duties.
